I try to be just as careful about what I put on my body as what I put in it.
Not only to improve the overall health of my skin, but also to help reduce the amount of harmful chemicals & toxins in my system.
Did you know…
- The FDA does not review or have the authority to regulate the ingredients in cosmetics. In fact, other than color additives, all ingredients in cosmetics, are not evaluated for safety by any accountable establishment, which means that shampoo, body & facial moisturizers, baby products, lipsticks or any other personal care product, are not reviewed before being marketed and sold(!). On top of that the US have banned only a fraction of all the potentially harmful & carcinogenic ingredients that are currently prohibited in the EU due to long term health concerns.
- The majority of lotions, creams & moisturizers are petroleum based, and a recent study from the Environmental Working Group found that up to 22% of all cosmetics contained 1,4-dioxane – a cancer-causing contaminant that was found in over 50% of baby soaps, most hair dyes, hair removers, firming lotions, anti-ageing products & many facial moisturizers.
- Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLS) is found in many shampoos, soaps & toothpaste, and is essentially what makes our soap foam. SLS is known to irritate skin cells, making them more prone to damage, and is, once absorbed by the skin also known to mimic the hormone estrogen, which can disrupt hormone balance, fertility & increase the risk of cancer. Oh, and SLS it is also found in carpet cleaners, glue, dish soap & mouthwash.
Instead of discussing the shortcomings of the industry though, I’d like to share some of my favorite natural products & tips that are completely safe, or at least safer alternatives, without compromising on quality.
Stay tuned for my next post about lipstick…
