My Favourite Natural Baby Care Products

After getting requests for natural baby skin care products, I decided to put together my list of personal favourites. Aside from skincare, I  wanted to include things like non-toxic nappies, bottles and gentle baby wipes without common irritants, perfumes and toxins. As with food, the ingredients in baby care products matter. With the skin being the body’s largest organ, ingredients in lotions, nappies and wipes are readily absorbed and can cause unnecessary discomfort and/or skin irritation. I hope following recommendations help give you all some good alternatives.

Nappies: Nature Babycare   Naty_Nappies_EU_Size_2

Although disposable nappies are the greenest and most natural way to go when it comes to nappies, they weren’t for me. That said, I did make a point of using the next best option and one that didn’t clog the landfills forever. While there are several brands of natural disposable diapers on the market, few are actually designed to be biodegradable. Aside from being based on biodegradable material, they are chlorine-free (very important!) and free of latex and plastics, meaning they have a soft, cloth-like feel against the skin. The absorbent pulp is made from sustainably harvested trees (Scandinavian trees to be specific), and are completely free of  TBT (tributyltin), fragrances and other chemicals that can irritate baby’s sensitive bottom, which makes these nappies my favourite!

BottlesLifefactory Non-Toxic Glass Bottles

Glass baby bottles are making a comeback! We are becoming more and more aware of all the harmful effects of plastic bottles and the toxic residual components in them that can leach into the milk (this also includes some BPA free bottles), which makes these glass bottles a great alternative. These fantastic bottles by Lifefactory combine a glass bottle with a grippy, chemical-free silicone sleeve that not only protects the bottles from breaking, but also makes it super easy for little ones to hold onto. The bottles fit any standard size nipple (can be bought separate), and both bottle and sleeve can go in the dishwasher. These are a win all round!

Baby Wipes: Elements 100% Natural & Compostable Wipes baby wipes

These gentle baby wipes are my favourites and are made with high-quality natural and compostable fibers from renewable resources. They are gentle, non-toxic, and plant-based and cleanse gently and effectively without causing any irritation. The packaging is eco-friendly too and contains no plastic, making them 100%  biodegradable and compostable.

Nappy Rash Ointment: Earth Mama Angel Baby Organic Bottom Balm

Unknown

Made from organic olive oils & shea butter infused with a proprietary blend of naturally antibacterial and antifungal organic herbs & pure essential oils, this ointment soothes thrush, itchy bug bites, scrapes, chicken pox, minor rashes, and burns.
When bub has nappy rash this is what I use. A little goes a long way and it heals up his nappy rash within a day.

Soap & Shampoo: Dr. Bronner’s Natural Baby Mild Liquid Soap drbronners-babymild-liquid-soap-4oz_357x400

Babies don’t actually need soaps or shampoos for the most part as they have naturally protective oils in their skin and scalp that are better not washed off. However, if and when you do need a soap to feel like baby is clean, I’d suggest Dr. Bronner’s baby milk liquid castille soap for both soap and shampoo. I’ve used this soap as body wash and shampoo on my son, August (now 20 months), since he was born and use it daily as a body wash myself. As strange as it may sound, this soap is made from natural oils and therefore doesn’t strip off all the body’s natural oils. It is brilliant!

Moisturiser: Aura Cacia Organic Jojoba Oile129f8be1a398959f5b547fa1b2bc604_ra,w403,h403_pa,w403,h403

Jojoba oil is one of the simplest and best natural moisturisers. It is the oil that most closely resembles the skins natural oils (sebum) and it supports the naturally protective and moisturising oils and therefore helps prevent rashes, dry skin and baby eczema. To avoid a completely greasy baby add a teaspoon or two to the bath water or apply to wet skin before towel drying. The warm bath water opens the pores on the skin, allowing for greater absorption. Jojoba oil is also a great natural solution for cradle cap (as is breast milk) and mild nappy rash. I chose to list Aura Cacia here but any organic, cold pressed jojoba oil works. Ask your local health food store for suggestions.

Toothpaste: Weleda Children’s Tooth Gel weleda-childrens-toothgel_large.gif?v=1355998733

This is the best baby/toddler tooth paste I’ve found so far and I love the simple ingredients it is made from. This tooth gel is fluoride free, as well as free of detergents, artifical fragrances, colors and preservatives. Moreover, it has a subtle mint flavour my son really enjoys and is rated a “3” on the EWG’s skin deep database with a 72% data gap. Since the only ingredent that is “yellow” (moderate safety) is limonene, I feel confident that it is a great and safe alternative to regular flouride-laden tooth pastes. The tube even has a BPA-free liner.
