How To Best Clean Fresh Produce

When it comes to cleaning fresh fruit & vegetables I once used to be on the lazy side, thinking “a little dirt can’t hurt”… True, if the produce is from your own garden, but if not – washing is definitely worth the hassle!

Washing produce properly & consuming organic foods is becoming more significant as we are learning more about all the negative effects pesticides & other industrial chemicals have on our health. While some are known to promote cancer, others have proven harmful for our nervous system, which in turn can have a negative effect on our hormonal balance. So after getting more serious about washing my veggies I now make my own cleansing spray, which works really well without requiring 10 minutes of soaking or a lengthy amount of scrubbing.

While doing some research the other day, I came across an interesting article where several apples & pears were cleaned using four different food washing techniques. Samples were removed from the washed fruits and the cultures evaluated several days later. Interestingly, results showed that while scrubbing removed 85% of bacteria, a simple vinegar/water solution, like the recipe below, removed all of 98% of bacteria!

It’s pretty simple, really. All you need is;

  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) vinegar
  • 2 cups (480 ml) water
  • empty spray bottle

I simply mix the vinegar & water and pour it into an empty spray bottle. Give it a shake and spray a few sprays onto my produce before washing it under cold water while gently rubbing for a few seconds.

A little 50 cent effort goes a long way here…!

Below is the US Environmental Working Group’s Shopper’s Guide, which is a great resource to help you reduce your own intake of pesticides by shopping correctly.
